IRCTC Uses AI System To Ensure Food Quality On Trains; Can Detect 9 Hygiene Lapses, Including Hair

To maintain the hygiene and quality of food supplied on Indian trains, IRCTC is using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to monitor meals prepared for passengers. More than 800 base kitchens supplying onboard food have been brought under surveillance through AI-enabled CCTV cameras linked to a central monitoring room in Delhi. Here’s how AI can help improve the quality of food on trains.

IRCTC Uses AI To Monitor Food Preparation 

IRCTC is leaving no stone unturned to make train journeys comfortable for passengers. And now, to ensure hygiene and food quality, it is putting Artificial Intelligence to use. According to The New Indian Express, around 2,400 AI-enabled cameras have been installed across 800 kitchens to ensure the quality of meals served onboard trains.

A dedicated room has been established at the IRCTC headquarters in Delhi, where AI-enabled cameras monitor kitchen operations and food preparation activities round the clock. Interestingly, this advanced system can detect even minor hygiene issues, such as a strand of hair. Can you believe that? The cameras can instantly identify deficiencies in food preparation and handling.

AI Cameras Can Detect Hair, Rodents, Flies & More

According to The Indian Express, this AI-enabled system detects nine factors responsible for unhygienic food on trains. These include hairnet compliance, transparent glove detection, mopping, wiping and the presence of rodents, flies and cockroaches. The cameras in the kitchen can instantly detect unhygienic practices and send alerts. It can even detect an insect as small as 7-8 mm.

As soon as the camera detects a problem, it sends a message to the concerned kitchen manager. If the issue is not resolved, the matter is escalated, and action is taken against the person responsible within two hours. Reportedly, this system started around two-and-a-half years ago, but authorities are constantly expanding it. They are bringing more kitchens and additional hygiene checks under this initiative.
