Climate change and its adverse effects are not hidden from anyone! One of the biggest examples of this is the rapidly melting glaciers across the world. X user, Duncan Porter, shared two photographs of Rhone Glacier, Switzerland with his wife. The pictures were taken 15 years apart and showcase the stark depletion of the glacier in the region. In the first picture, taken 15 years ago, Duncan and his wife can be seen smiling happily against the backdrop of the expansive white glacier. In contrast, the second picture shows the couple standing against a significantly receded glacier, highlighting the adverse effects of climate change in the region.

Duncan, in his post, said, “Fifteen years minus one day between these photos. Taken at the Rhone glacier in Switzerland today. Not gonna lie, it made me cry.” As per a LinkedIn post by a charity, Protect Earth, Duncan is an environmentalist at heart. He volunteers and puts time, money, and effort into doing his bit to protect the environment.

With over 4.1 million views, the now-viral post has started a conversation again about overtourism in Europe and the severe effects of climate change like melting glaciers.

It is no news that due to rising global temperatures, glaciers around the world are melting at a rapid pace. According to a World Economic Forum report, over the last two years, Switzerland’s glaciers have experienced a 10% decline in total volume. It further highlighted that in 2022 alone, Swiss glaciers suffered a record 6% volume loss. This has been the most significant volume loss recorded since 1960! In 2023, an additional 4% glacial loss was recorded in Switzerland.

Also, overtourism in Europe has severely affected the continent. This summer was one of the worst experienced by European countries. High temperatures and water shortages in several regions along with the added pressure of tourists just made it worse for the locals. Several countries even protested against overtourism and demanded the authorities put a cap on the number of tourists allowed in an area.

This X post really shows how the glacial beauty of Europe has been affected by climate change. What are your thoughts on this post highlighting melting glaciers in the world? Let us know in the comments.
