J&K Plans To Turn 600 Heritage Sites Into Tourism Hubs; Here’s What This Means

Over 600 heritage sites, including protected and unlisted monuments, have been identified across Jammu and Kashmir. The J&K government is now planning to develop these sites into tourism hubs to increase tourist footfall in the beautiful destination. Here’s what this means for travellers and for J&K.

J&K Govt Plans To Revive Heritage Sites

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah recently addressed a meeting on heritage promotion and cultural tourism. He spoke about how heritage sites in the Union Territory could be reused to increase tourist footfall. According to the Kashmir Observer, over 600 heritage sites have been identified across the region.

These include both protected and unlisted monuments. This means that Jammu and Kashmir can unlock a lot of potential to attract more visitors if these sites are developed properly. This plan will not just boost tourism and economic growth but also help preserve its cultural legacy.

Heritage Sites May Be Developed Into Tourism Hubs

According to the Kashmir Observer, the meeting also focused on how states like Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh have transformed neglected heritage structures into vibrant tourism destinations. This shows that if authorities act on it, Jammu and Kashmir could soon have similar tourism hubs.

CM Omar Abdullah pointed to projects like Qila Mubarak, Neemrana Fort, and Orchha Fort as examples where heritage hotels, museums, and experiential spaces generate revenue while preserving history. If everything goes as planned, these heritage sites could soon be developed through the PPP model. Tourists will not just visit Jammu and Kashmir for its snow and cuisine but also to explore its rich heritage.

Kashmir already enjoys a lot of popularity for its natural beauty and iconic destinations like Srinagar, known for Dal Lake and Mughal gardens, and Gulmarg, where people visit for skiing and other adventure activities.
