Just 40-Min From Bhubaneswar, Experience Nature At Svanir Homestay Where Trees & Odisha’s Charms Reign Supreme

As dawn breaks and the first rays of sunlight filter through the dense canopy, my wake-up call is not of that typical phone ring from the reception—a chorus of avian voices tap gently on the cottage door like eager messengers. The mantra is simple in Svanir Wilderness Homestay- wake up to birdsong, and retire to utter stillness. 40 minutes by car from Odisha’s Bhubaneshwar, the homestay offers an unparalleled experience of waking up to the gentle melodies of birdsong and the embrace of verdant foliage.

Nature’s Embrace In Svanir Homestay

Svanir Homestay

The moment you enter Svanir Homestay, you are engulfed in a tranquil oasis.  True to its name, Svanir in Sanskrit is ‘our own nest’ and time seems to slow to a leisurely pace, allowing you to savour the simple joys of existence.  A straight path takes you to the six air-conditioned cottages carpeted with wildflowers, shrubs, mango, guava, chikoo, pomegranate and custard apple trees. Everywhere you look, Mother Nature pulses and thrives here. You pause to listen to the rustle of leaves, the chirp of crickets or the distant call of a bird in flight!

The homestay itself brings harmonious coexistence of human habitation and the natural world. Built with care and reverence for the environment, it blends seamlessly into its surroundings. The homestay’s rustic charm complements the timeless beauty of the landscape. As you step through the gates and into this oasis of serenity, you see the sight of the charming cottages. If one cottage faces a lily pond, while the other faces a mango orchard. But it’s not just the picturesque surroundings that set this homestay apart; it’s the little details that whisper of Odisha’s rich cultural heritage.  If one cottage is dedicated to the mask makers of Chidiapally Village, the other one honours the Dokra craft. From people to wildlife or the sun and moon, Santhal art fills the foot of the bed and the cottage. Everywhere you look, there are reminders of the natural beauty and cultural richness that define this land.

Natural materials such as wood and stone are used throughout the cottages, adding warmth and texture to the space. Large windows let in an abundance of natural light, creating a sense of openness and connection to the outdoors. Outside, amidst the tranquil beauty of the surrounding landscape, lies a private verandah. You can unwind and soak in the sights and sounds of nature. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast or sip a cup of your morning tea.

Home Away From Home

Svanir Homestay

But it’s not just the picturesque surroundings that make Svanir Wilderness Homestay a truly special destination. It’s the thoughtful attention to detail and the genuine warmth of the hosts that set it apart from the rest. Meet Soumya and Indrani Mukherji, the dynamic duo behind Svanir Wilderness Homestay. The couple, along with their son and parents, stay on the property. Their commitment to sustainable tourism has transformed a simple idea into a thriving sanctuary of tranquillity and culture.

From hearty breakfasts to cosy dinners, every dish is lovingly prepared by Indrani and some women helpers from the nearby, Dalua village. The village community is connected to Svanir in different ways. Indrani is especially proud that every single one of them—aside from the gardener—are female employees. The dishes are prepared using locally sourced ingredients, from their kitchen garden. Everything is grown with love and attention, using organic methods that respect the natural rhythms of the land and minimise environmental impact. Whether it’s juicy mangoes, crunchy cucumbers, or fragrant basil, the food is a testament to the freshness and flavour that only homegrown produce can provide. From Chinese dishes to fresh toasts and omelettes, you get to savour authentic farm-to-table experiences.

Svanir Homestay

Every aspect of Svanir is infused with a deep commitment to environmental stewardship and conservation. Using rainwater harvesting and drip irrigation, the homestay is reducing its carbon footprint. A bucket is provided instead of a shower in the bathroom to avoid water waste. Natural and locally sourced materials were used wherever possible. This helped in reducing the carbon footprint associated with transportation and minimising the ecological impact of construction. Moreover, environmental education is woven into the fabric of the guest experience. You can participate in eco-friendly activities such as nature walks, birdwatching, and tree planting.

Don’t Miss Out On Dalua Village Walk

Throughout your stay, the family is always on hand to offer insider tips and recommendations, whether it’s where to find the best local cuisine or the hidden gems off the beaten path. They go above and beyond for their guests’ needs. Additionally, you can take a leisurely walk around the property, watch birds, play board games, or borrow some art supplies if you want to draw or paint. Or maybe read, listening to the chirping of the birds? The couple is an avid reader and has a carefully curated collection of books that spans genres and subjects. From the intricate art of Pattachitra painting to Dhokra metal casting, Indrani and Soumya can even give you first-hand knowledge of Odisha’s art and culture.

From Svanir homestay, Dalua village is just a stone’s throw away. As you set out on foot, you traverse winding paths and lush green fields, passing by grazing cattle and smiling villagers. Their curious looks and warming nature serve as a constant reminder of how simple life still is. As you wander through the narrow lanes and open fields, you have the opportunity to interact with these locals. They are eager to share their stories, traditions, and way of life with curious travellers. Thatched-roof huts and mud-plastered walls with decorated motifs are rare to find. Amidst the rustic beauty of the countryside, life unfolds at a leisurely pace.

Svanir Homestay

While Dalua itself may not be a widely known tourist destination, its proximity to Bhubaneswar makes it accessible for travellers. The ones who seek to explore the cultural heritage and natural beauty of rural Odisha. Unlike many other communities in India, where idol worship is a prevalent practice, the people of Dalua have long embraced a spiritual path. For generations, the villagers of Dalua have looked to the earth, the sky, and the elements as manifestations of the divine.  Rather than building temples or erecting statues, they offer their prayers and devotion directly to nature itself.

But even as you venture out into the world beyond the homestay, you find yourself drawn back time and again to the tranquillity and comfort of your cottage. “When you visit Svanir, you come here as a visitor, but leave as a family member,” concludes Indrani.
