Kerala Government Announces Coronavirus Outbreak A State Calamity

The first case of coronavirus in India was from the state of Kerala. A student studying at Wuhan University contracted the virus. This was followed by another coronavirus case in the state. Recently a third patient was tested positive for the deadly virus in Kerala. And now, Kerala has announced the coronavirus outbreak to be a state calamity. KK Shailaja, the Health Minister of Kerala stated that the decision was taken as per the direction of Chief Minister Pinarayi and the Disaster Management Authority’s apex committee discussion on the wake of the epidemic outbreak in Kerala.

What’s In It?

The third case of coronavirus in the state was confirmed on 3rd February from the northern district of Kasaragod. The third victim of this virus was also a student studying at Wuhan University. and recently returned from Wuhan. The health minister revealed that all three patients suffering from coronavirus in Kerala were classmates at Wuhan University. She also revealed that the condition of all three patients is stable, while the two patients first tested positive have shown improvement in their health.

The state government has already begun identifying who might have interacted or come into contact with the patients before they were isolated at hospitals. Government officials have revealed that 2239 people from the state who had visited China recently, have also been put into observation. This includes 2155 people who have been home quarantined, and 84 have been isolated in hospitals.

Currently, 140 samples have been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV)in Pune, out of this 36 have been declared negative and three are announced to be positive. The remaining samples are still being tested. The Health Minister of Kerala, KK Shailaja, has urged people to remain wary and assured them that there is no need for panic. The guidelines issued by the government need to be strictly followed by residents of the state. Kerala government is taking atmost steps to make sure the virus doesn’t spread. From identifying people who come in contact with visitors from China, revealing hospital hotlines, medical precautions to be taken and even informing people about do’s and don’t about the virus, the state is doing its best. Health Department headquarters and state headquarters now have corona control rooms. Efforts are also being taken to avoid mass hysteria but preventing fake news or misinformation about the virus. Within hours of the first case of coronavirus outbreak, Kerala built 15 isolation wards in just 5 hours. We hope the patients in Kerala recover and the spread of the virus is contained.
