A massive landslide occurred in the Wayanad district of Kerala after heavy rainfalls. The first landslide occurred in the wee hours of Tuesday, July 30 2024. 57 people are feared to be dead and it is estimated that more than 100 people are trapped in the deluge left by this disaster. As per reports by a Malayalam news channel, 24 News, the death toll is now up to 57. According to an article which was recently published by the Lokmat Times, the first landslide took place near the Chooral Mala School at around 4 AM. This functioned as a camp for people whose houses nearby were flooded after heavy rainfalls.

In addition to this, regions like Meppadi and Mundakkal Town, have also been struck by landslides. It is feared that 400 families have been stranded in the regions. If reports are to go by, many cars and houses have been washed away owing to this disaster.

Two helicopters, Mi-17 and ALH, departed for rescue operations from Sulur at 7:30 AM. The chief minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, has confirmed that the government agencies have also joined in dispatching help for the disaster.

The National Health Department in Wayanad has also opened a control room and has issued emergency numbers – 8086010833 and 9656938689. As per The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority or KSDMA, the National Disaster Response Force or the NDRF has been deployed to the areas that were affected by the landslide.
