In a significant move towards urban redevelopment, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has announced plans of rehabilitation for long-standing hawkers outside the ageing Park Circus market. The vendors stand to benefit from a new scheme aimed at resolving the impasse surrounding the market’s renovation.
Rehabilitation Of Hawkers Outside Park Circus Market
Under the new initiative, each hawker will be allotted 35 square feet of space. This marks a pivotal step in the KMC’s efforts to modernise the area. The decision comes after extensive consultations with stall owners and hawkers, who will temporarily relocate to Park Circus Maidan during the market’s reconstruction.
Officials from the KMC’s market department have conducted surveys to identify the hawkers currently operating outside the dilapidated market. They are working together to seamlessly integrate these vital local vendors into the upcoming redevelopment plans.

Relocation And Reconstruction
Following a meeting between KMC officials and representatives from the historic market, they reached consensus on various crucial aspects of the relocation and reconstruction process. Amiruddin (Bobby), who heads the KMC’s markets department, affirmed that they would consider only genuine, long-standing hawkers for the relocation, excluding part-time vendors or those who have transferred their rights.
The decision has been met with support from both traders and civic authorities alike. This highlights a unified approach towards revitalising Kolkata’s market infrastructure. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also expressed urgency in addressing the city’s market conditions, emphasising the need for immediate repairs to prevent any potential hazards.
The existing Park Circus market was constructed in phases dating back to the 1930s. It has been a focal point for local commerce but has suffered from neglect in recent years. With plans for a new six-storey structure including underground parking, the KMC aims to not only modernise but also enhance safety and accessibility for both traders and shoppers.
Furthermore, traders have successfully lobbied for a reduction in market category. This will lower rental costs and ease financial burdens during the transition period. This move underscores the KMC’s commitment to supporting local businesses throughout the redevelopment phase.
