His widowed daughter-in-law, Ahilyabai Holkar, became a symbol of courage and perseverance and assumed leadership after the passing of her husband, father-in-law, and son. Introduced by Queen Ahilyabai in the 18th century, these sarees were originally woven for the women of the royal court. Over time, as industrialisation boomed in the state, the craft of weaving Maheshwari sarees declined. Thanks to the efforts of the Holkar family and the establishment of the Rehwa Society in 1979, the tradition was revived. Today, Maheshwari sarees are a sought-after piece of art, known for their elegance, unique motifs, and borders inspired by the carvings of Maheshwar’s temples and fort. The Rehwa Society still plays an important role in supporting and nurturing this craft, employing over 250 weavers and preserving the centuries-old tradition.

By Air:

The nearest airport is Indore Airport, located approximately 66 kilometres away. From there, you can take a private taxi or public transport to reach Maheshwar.

By Rail:

The nearest railway station is Barwaha, around 39 km from Maheshwar. However, it has limited connectivity. A more convenient option is to arrive at Indore Junction, 96 km away. From Indore, you can travel to Maheshwar by taxi or bus.
