Have you relished a traditional South Indian feast? If yes, chances are that the mouth-watering delicacies were served on a huge banana leaf. From local restaurants to serving dishes at home on a special occasion, banana leaves have always been an integral part of South Indian cuisine. Though we mostly see foodies indulging in a feast on rectangular-shaped leaves, a viral video shows the making of circular banana leaf plates. Is this usual or just a unique representation? Let’s find out!

Instagram Reel Of Cutting Banana Leaf Plates Raises Eyebrows

Blogger Salove Bhardwaj (@foodiee_sahab) shared a viral video showing the process of making plates using banana leaves.

It looks like the clips have been recorded at a plate-making factory. According to the video, the location is in Chennai. The video begins with showcasing the manufacturing process of banana leaf plates. A man placed a round steel plate on a stack of banana leaves and used a sharp tool to cut them out like the steel plate.

Along with circular plates, the video also demonstrated the behind-the-scenes of cutting rectangle banana leaf plates. A man cut the leaves, trimmed their edges and stems, and stacked them together using newspapers. Next, a banana stem strip was used to tie everything all together and form bundles.

Instagrammers shared their concerns about banana leaf wastage in the comment section of this reel. They raised questions regarding the necessity of cutting normal leaves into circular shapes. Usually, we see restaurants serving South Indian dishes on normally-shaped banana leaves. The plate is huge enough to have proper space for serving each food item, mixing them, and enjoying every delicacy.

A Netizen asked, “What is that? Why are they cutting banana leaves?” Another comment read, “Why are they doing round-shaped plates!!? Those are causing so much wastage of good and fresh banana leaves.” Another user commented, “Circle krke waste krne ki kya jaroorat hai. Waise hi acchi lag rahi this.” Someone also wrote, “Using in normal shape is better. It produces lots of waste.”
