Man Was Denied Boarding Pass; Travel Firm Asked To Pay ₹96,490 As Compensation

Most of us prefer a travel agency to plan our trips and holidays, mostly because of the offers or because the place is completely new for us. However, there have been cases where people were duped by the travel agency under the pretext of arranging their holidays. A similar case happened with this man who booked a flight ticket but was denied the boarding pass! But the travel firm was asked to pay compensation.

Man Booked A Flight Ticket But Was Denied Boarding Pass!

A man named Amardeep Singh had booked a flight from Delhi to Toronto on February 9, 2018, through a travel agency in Gurugram. The flight was supposed to take off from New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. Further, it was supposed to land in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 26 Feb 2018. Then, the flight was supposed to fly from Addis Ababa to Toronto.

According to a report by The Tribune, the complainant claimed that he reached IGIA in Delhi around 7 am on Feb 25 2018 for the boarding pass. However, he was denied one as the e-ticket issued by the travel agency was not valid and confirmed. Moreover, it was a cancelled ticket!

Travel Firm To Pay The Complaint

The man registered a complaint against the travel agency and District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (DCDRC) took interest in the case. According to the authorities, the travel agency was asked to pay ₹96,490 to the man as a claim amount and punitive damages.

The amount is bifurcated as ₹46,490 will be the claim amount. Further, ₹50,000 will be the punitive damages within a period of 40 days from the date of the order.

In another case, a Chandigarh resident, Pranay Barapatre, also claimed compensation. The resident had booked a holiday membership worth ₹45,000 for his wife, daughter and himself. The membership was valid for six years, however, the opposite party failed to provide him with the membership kit!

The DCDRC authorities asked the travel agency to compensate the complaint with ₹2,500 and an additional amount of ₹7,000 for his legal fees.

Further, the commission asked the travel agency to pay ₹22,500 with a 9 per cent interest which was taken in advance.
