In an unfortunate series of events, Mahashivratri celebrations in Mauritius turned awry when a fire broke out. The fire ended up injuring a number of devotees and even claimed the lives of six people. The External Affairs Minister, Dr. S Jaishankar, also expressed condolences over the incident. Here are all of the important details and latest updates that you would need to know about this unfortunate fire in Mauritius and how it started.

How Did The Fire In Mahashivratri Celebrations In Mauritius Start?

According to an article which was recently published by India Today, the fire broke out when electric wires came in contact with effigies. The devotees were marching towards the Grand Bassin Lake. This lake is considered to be one of the holy places for the Hindu community in the country.

As per the Police Commissioner, Anil Kumar Dip, cited in the article, the fire started when the carts and electric wires came into contact. The carts which were carrying the effigies were made of bamboo. They quickly went up in flames.

This fire then ended up claiming a total of six lives. In addition to this, as many as seven Hindu devotees were also injured owing to the fire.

Other Latest Updates Of The Situation In Mauritius

The incident caught international attention. The External Affairs Minister of India, Dr. S Jaishankar, also commented on the incident. He took to X (formerly known as Twitter) and expressed his condolences over the event.

He said that he was saddened to hear about this tragic incident and he’s sending his condolences to the bereaving families of all those who were lost to or impacted owing to this unfortunate fire.

The Hindu community in Mauritius is the largest one. More than 48.5 per cent of the population there is Hindu.
