Saudi Arabia’s northwest coast is slowly getting busier. Hence, Red Sea Global has reopened AlWajh International Airport after a major upgrade to serve the tourists, just as the much-talked-about AMAALA destination prepares to welcome guests soon.

The airport had already been operating in a smaller way before, but this latest reopening feels different. Bigger planes can now land there. And for many people in the Tabuk region, it means easier access to jobs, tourism activity, and faster travel without driving for hours.
Right now, Saudia is operating three weekly flights from Riyadh and two from Jeddah. International routes are expected later on. However, exact dates haven’t been shared yet.
Travellers Heading To AMAALA To Travel With Ease
AMAALA is about 45 minutes from the airport by electric vehicle. There’s also a seaplane option that cuts the journey to around 20 minutes.
The airport is expected to become one of the main entry points for visitors heading to the luxury wellness destination. Red Sea Global says the airport can now handle aircraft like the Airbus A320 and Boeing B737 families.
Passenger numbers could also increase sharply. The airport previously handled around 100,000 travellers annually. After the expansion, that number has gone up to 500,000.
The airports still seem designed around smaller-scale travel. Just cleaner, faster, and more prepared for what’s coming next.

Locals Are Likely To Feel The Change Too
More flights normally mean more business movement, hotel demand, transport services, and eventually more hiring. Red Sea Global says the improved airport connectivity is expected to support employment and economic activity across the wider Tabuk region.
Also, the design itself apparently takes inspiration from AlWajh’s traditional architecture and the nearby coastline rather than looking ultra-futuristic for no reason. Which honestly makes sense considering the location.
Inside the terminal, there are now premium lounges, cafés, a mini-market, banking services, car rentals, and parking facilities. The airport can also handle helicopters and seaplanes, which ties into AMAALA’s transport plans.
For now, it’s still early days. But Saudi Arabia clearly wants this part of the coast to become far more connected than it used to be. And reopening this airport is a pretty important step in that direction.
