UAE Announces Restoration Of Syria’s Famous Umayyad Mosque In Damascus

The UAE has announced plans to restore the historic Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, one of the most recognised religious and cultural sites in the Arab world. The project will move ahead with support from Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, also known across the UAE as the Mother of the Nation. The announcement came during a visit to the mosque by Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi in Syria this week.

UAE To Restore Damascus’ Historic Umayyad Mosque With Heritage Revamp

For many Syrians, the mosque is not just a religious site. It’s tied deeply to the country’s identity and history. Even people who have never visited Damascus usually know about it because of its importance in Islamic civilisation and the old Syrian heritage. According to UAE officials, the work will include restoring parts of the mosque structurally and architecturally. The surrounding historical area is also expected to be revitalised as part of the wider effort. Officials said the goal is to preserve the character of the area while respecting Syrian culture and everyday life around it.

A lot of old-city restoration projects around the world end up looking overly commercial or disconnected from local communities. The UAE says this project will focus on keeping the Syrian identity of the area intact.

The Mosque Holds Huge Historical Importance

The Umayyad Mosque is considered one of the oldest and most important mosques in the Islamic world. Over the years, it has survived wars, political change and periods of damage. Also, it remains one of Damascus’ best-known landmarks.

During the visit, Al Kaabi said Syria holds a special place in Arab and Islamic civilisation, adding that the mosque represents an important cultural symbol shared across the region. The UAE linked the initiative to the humanitarian approach long associated with the country’s founding leader, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Heritage Restoration Is Becoming A Bigger Focus

In recent years, Gulf countries have become more involved in heritage restoration projects across the region, especially in places affected by conflict or ageing infrastructure. Damascus is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and many of its historical areas have struggled after years of instability.
