The authorities have charged Aman Abdul Sattar Khan, identified as the manager, and Yuvraj Nandkumar Moghe, the owner, with multiple offences under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.  Assistant Conservator of Forest (ACF) Sonal Valvi underscored the gravity of the situation, affirming that the accused stand accused of illegal possession, trade, and display of animals listed under the Act’s stringent Schedule I and IV.

The authorities wasted no time in lodging an FIR against the perpetrators, citing violations of several sections of the Wildlife Protection Act. This decisive action follows revelations that the zoo had been operating without the requisite approvals from the Central Zoo Authority. This raised concerns about its legitimacy and compliance with regulatory standards.

The absence of recognition from the CZA prompted a thorough investigation into the zoo’s operations. This culminated in the seizure of seven protected and exotic animals during a recent inspection. Authorities seized an Argentinian black and white Tegus, ball pythons, soft shell turtles, and even a cuckoo, all of which were being held illegally without proper documentation. This further exacerbated the zoo’s legal predicament.

In a notable development, amendments to the Wildlife Protection Act in 2023 extended protections to exotic animals. This effectively tightens the noose around illegal wildlife trade and exploitation. The ramifications of these legislative changes have reverberated throughout the Dadar case. This has amplified the severity of the charges laid against the accused.

In response to mounting scrutiny, the zoo has ceased operations. Proprietors have initiated the dismantling of structures in compliance with investigative directives. This proactive measure underscores a commitment to rectifying past transgressions. It will also cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure accountability and adherence to conservation principles.
