The Bandra-Kurla Complex or BKC region of Mumbai will soon be getting a pod taxi service. This will be the first such service in the ‘Financial Capital of India’. On Tuesday, March 5, 2024, the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority approved the plan for a pod taxi service. This service promises to decongest the BKC area which is notorious for traffic jams. From ticket prices to halts, here are all of the important details that you would need to know about this particular new taxi service.

According to an article which was recently published by Mid-day, the pod taxi service will stretch across more than 8 kilometres between Bandra and Kurla railway stations. Each of the pods will have a maximum capacity of six passengers and will be running at a speed of 40 kilometres per hour.
Each of the pods will halt at a total of 38 stops and the entire project will be executed as a public-private partnership. In 2017, when the plan was first discussed, the cost was estimated at ₹50 crore per kilometre.
However, as per a recent Free Press Journal or FPJ article, the total cost is estimated to be ₹1,018 crores. The plan will also see a depot for the taxis within BKC. It will sprawl 5,000 square metres. Other specific details like ticket prices will also be determined soon.

Each of the pods will measure 3.5 metres in length, 1.47 metres in width and 1.8 metres in height. As of now, the pod taxi service is available in a few other countries. Once it commences in Mumbai, it promises to revolutionise public transport.
