After a prolonged dry spell, Mumbai has been battered by heavy rainfall over the past few days, disrupting normal life across the city. The downpour has significantly impacted air travel, leading to multiple flight delays, cancellations, and diversions. With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for Mumbai on Sunday, here’s everything you need to know.
Heavy Rains Disrupt Flights At Mumbai Airport
According to CNBC-TV18, adverse weather conditions disrupted flight operations at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Sunday. Strong winds and poor visibility forced airport authorities to temporarily suspend flight operations for an hour, from 10:15 am to 11:15 am.
The temporary closure affected one of the country’s busiest airports, resulting in several incoming flights being diverted to Ahmedabad, Indore, Surat, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.
Since CSMIA’s single operational runway typically handles around 40-45 flight movements every hour, the suspension triggered a ripple effect, causing delays of more than 40 minutes for several flights throughout the day.
According to the Hindu Business Line, more than 28 flights were delayed at the airport and around four flights were completely cancelled due poor weather.

According to flightradar24.com, 87% of the flights were delayed at the airport, while another 62% arrived late. The IMD issued a red alert for Mumbai on Sunday, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in the city.
The incessant rainfall triggered multiple incidents across Mumbai, including tree falls, road cave-ins, house collapses, and severe traffic congestion. Keeping the weather conditions in mind, officials urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel across the city and stay indoors, as much as possible.
