Kandivali-Borivali 5th & 6th Lines Complete; Western Railway To Start Operations From Jan 19

Mumbai’s local trains are a lifeline, keeping the city moving. Now, to offer better services and passenger convenience, Western Railway has reached another milestone with the completion of the 5th and 6th lines on the Kandivali–Borivali section—a big relief for daily commuters. Scroll down to know more!

Kandivali-Borivali Route Update

On Sunday, Western Railway completed the 5th and 6th Broad Gauge lines between Kandivali and Borivali, Mumbai. According to Mid-Day, this means the Bandra–Borivali stretch now has both the 5th and 6th lines. The best part is that officials announced the new lines will begin operations on Monday, January 19.

The 3.21-kilometre Kandivali–Borivali section has been approved for passengers and freight after a detailed inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Western Circle. The CRS checked the lines on foot and by motor trolley and also conducted speed trials with electric locomotives. During testing, trains ran at a speed of 85 kmph on the 5th line and 107 kmph on the 6th line.

Work Completed In Just 30 Days

The amazing part of this project is that Western Railway completed the Kandivali–Borivali line work in just 30 days. As per Mid-Day, work began on December 18, 2025, and was completed on January 17, 2026. To make sure the project was completed quickly, officials temporarily suspended the existing 5th line between Kandivali and Goregaon. However, workers did face challenges because of limited space and active railway lines nearby. To avoid any problems, most of the earthwork and material movement was done during night blocks and shutdown periods.

The project included extensive track and structural work. Engineers realigned the existing 5th line, installed 19 new points and crossings, and removed 18 old ones. They also fitted 13 Switch Expansion Joints. Bridge work covered four minor bridges and one major bridge, with a 36-hour mega block used to complete critical re-girdering on Major Bridge No. 61.
