Mumbai Eatery Charged ₹10 Extra For Icecream

In June 2014, then Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) Bhaskar Jadha ordered a pack of ice cream from Shagun Veg Restaurant. He told the tabloid Mid-day, that he purchased a 700 ml pack and received a bill of ₹175. When he checked the pack for its expiry date, he noticed that the MRP was ₹165. So, he asked the restaurant to return ₹10, but they refused. They labelled this extra cost as “cooling charge”. He then approached the District Commissioner Disputes Redressal Forum in South Mumbai.

And now, the forum has ruled in his favour. It said that that the eatery has been present for around 24 years, earning ₹  40,000-50,000 on a daily basis. It has certainly charged more than the MRP to make a profit. In their defence, restaurant representatives said that there was a difference between shop and restaurants. They reiterated that the extra charge was to store the ice cream. However, the forum dismissed this because Jadhav had bought the ice cream from the counter only. Which is why, it ordered the eatery to rightly compensate him and also cough up an additional deposit of Rs 2 lakh.
