In the latest update on the Navi Mumbai International Airport, an ambitious greenfield project in Ulwe, significant progress has been reported. According to Union Minister for Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia, the airport, initially slated to commence operations on March 31, 2025, is now aiming for an earlier start, with commercial operations potentially kicking off by December 2024.

Navi Mumbai Airport’s 60% Completion Marks Milestone

During a press conference on January 13, Minister Scindia provided insights into the airport’s remarkable advancements. According to CNBC, approximately 60% of the project has already been completed, putting it on track for the revised timeline. The airport’s development will unfold in five phases, with the initial phases focusing on activating the first terminal and runway. By March 31, 2025, the airport is expected to open with an initial passenger capacity of 2 crore.

As the project progresses through phases three, four, and five, the passenger capacity is projected to skyrocket to an impressive 9 crore. The final phase is slated for completion by 2032. It is also anticipated to accommodate over 9 crore passengers annually, along with handling 25 lakh metric tonnes of cargo.

Apart from its structural accomplishments, the Navi Mumbai International Airport also distinguishes itself with integrated connectivity across road, rail, metro, and water transport facilities. This multi-modal connectivity is also expected to enhance the airport’s accessibility and convenience for travellers.
