Celebrity chef René Redzepi has been accused of verbal and physical abuse by a dozen former employees. The chef, known globally for his innovative Nordic cuisine and his restaurant Noma in Copenhagen, recently grabbed headlines over allegations of abusive behaviour. Addressing the matter, he took to social media to issue a public apology.

René Redzepi Accused Of Abusive Behaviour By Former Employees

Recently, The New York Times published an exposé reporting that several former employees accused chef René Redzepi, founder, head chef, and co-owner of the renowned Noma, of violent punishments and verbal abuse. According to the report, staff members claimed such abusive behaviour was “normal in the Noma kitchens.”

The report stated that at least 35 former staff members of Noma confirmed that the celebrity chef mistreated employees, describing it as a routine occurrence. They alleged violent punishments, including punching and pushing, and claimed that the chef was never fully held accountable for such actions.

One such incident recalled by staff reportedly took place in February 2014. René Redzepi allegedly paused dinner service at Noma and asked the entire kitchen staff to follow him outside into the cold. Employees said they were instructed to form a circle around Redzepi and a sous-chef, after which the chef began taunting the employee, reportedly screaming at and kicking him.

According to former staff members, the sous-chef’s mistake was playing techno music, something Redzepi disliked in the production kitchen. In a 2015 interview, the chef himself acknowledged that he had “yelled and pushed people.”

After The New York Times report gained everyone’s attention, René Redzepi took to Instagram to issue a statement in this matter. Here’s an excerpt from the post, “I want to address past stories around my leadership in the kitchen that have resurfaced recently. Although I don’t recognize all details in these stories, I can see enough of my past behavior reflected in them to understand that my actions were harmful to people who worked with me. To those who have suffered under my leadership, my bad judgment, or my anger, I am deeply sorry and I have worked to change.”
