The Northeast is to see a revolutionary change in infrastructure with the region’s first expressway, saving considerable time in commuting from Guwahati to Panchgram. The ambitious project is part of a larger scheme under Advantage Assam 2.0, which aims to increase connectivity and economic development.
Northeast’s First Expressway: Game-Changer For Assam
During the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit, Assam inked 164 MoUs, amounting to ₹1.89 lakh crore, to improve its infrastructure. One of the biggest takeaways of the event was the first expressway in the Northeast, which will lower travel time and enhance road connectivity by a considerable margin.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while speaking at a session on transport and infrastructure, highlighted the state’s intent to modernise transport routes.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari unveiled an ₹55,179 crore infrastructure package to improve Assam’s road infrastructure. The most ambitious project of this package is the four-lane expressway from Guwahati to Barapani (Umiam, Meghalaya).
This complex road, with many tunnels, will be an unbroken connector between Guwahati and Panchgram and would benefit industries, travellers, and tourists.

Raising Rail And Water Transport In Assam
Along with upgrading road transport, the government is making significant investments in railway and waterway transport. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced two new intercity trains between Guwahati and Silchar and Agartala, enhancing passenger movement throughout the region.
Since 2014, new rail tracks covering 1,824 km have been built in Assam and the Northeast. The Gati Shakti cargo terminals to be introduced will also improve freight transport, building the trade network of Assam.
Water transportation is another vital segment, with Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal mentioning the judicious utilisation of the Barak and Brahmaputra rivers to move cargo and human traffic. The project will ease better trade and connectivity to remote places, unlocking new economic prospects.
With the addition of the region’s first expressway, Assam is stepping toward a new generation of infrastructure. The Advantage Assam 2.0 scheme, with top-level investments in roads, rails, and waterways, promises to place the state on the map as an economic gateway for the Northeast region.
With these projects rolling out, the reality of greater connectivity and economic opportunities is now more within reach.
