Naples has long been regarded as the birthplace of pizza, with many claiming that the city serves the best version of one of the world’s most beloved foods: the Margherita pizza. Pizza is more than just a meal in Italy—it’s a symbol of national pride. However, 50 Top Pizza, an organization run by Italian food enthusiasts, has named a New York pizzeria as the best in the world.

Italy is considered one of the most popular places to enjoy a hearty slice of pizza, where the dish holds deep cultural significance. From Naples’ iconic Neapolitan style to Rome’s crisp and thin crusts, pizza is a culinary art form across the country. Yet, in a surprising twist, 50 Top Pizza, an organization run by Italian food enthusiasts, has named a New York pizzeria as the best in the world.
Enter 50 Top Pizza, an organization run by Italian food enthusiasts that ranks pizzerias globally. In their most recent ranking, 50 Top Pizza made waves by awarding the title of the world’s finest pizza to a restaurant not in Naples, or even in Italy, but in New York City. Anthony Mangieri’s Una Pizza Napoletana, located on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, clinched the coveted top spot.
So how did a New York pizzeria come to top the rankings, surpassing even the legendary pizzerias of Naples? Mangieri’s pizza, like traditional Neapolitan pizza, has a thin, slightly chewy crust with a light char. The dough is naturally leavened and fermented over several days, which gives it a unique texture and flavour. Toppings are kept minimal, often just high-quality tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and olive oil, allowing the dough to shine.
Other Pizza Places Than Italy

Despite its name, 50 Top Pizza releases an annual ranking of the world’s 100 best pizzerias. This year’s list featured restaurants from cities across the globe, including Tokyo, London, Rome, Vienna, Makati, and Hong Kong. Although Italy didn’t claim the top spot, it dominated the rankings, securing 41 out of the 100 positions. The United States also made a strong showing, with 15 pizzerias featured, including Tony’s Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco and Pizzeria Beddia in Philadelphia.
Pizza continues to evolve and spread across the globe. For pizza lovers, this global competition is a win-win. Whether you’re enjoying a classic Margherita in the heart of Naples or savoring a slice of Mangieri’s artistry in New York, the essence of pizza remains the same. Wherever you find it, great pizza is always worth the journey!
