As Mumbai gears up to welcome Lord Ganesha, the city’s favourite festive sweet is set to arrive at doorsteps in a whole new way this year. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched ‘Modak Mahotsav 2026’, offering Mumbaikars traditional ukadiche (steamed) and fried modaks prepared by women’s self-help groups (SHGs) backed by the civic body.
How Modak Mahotsav 2026 Works
With modak demand spiking every year during Ganeshotsav, the BMC has tied the festival’s biggest sweet craving to a civic empowerment push. Citizens can register online for home delivery, with orders reaching doorsteps from 14 September, timed to the start of the 11-day festival. The service, however, is available only within Mumbai city limits, so those outside the municipal boundary will need to look elsewhere for their modak fix this year.
A Platform For Women Entrepreneurs
The initiative gives Mumbaikars access to modaks made by trained women’s SHGs, while giving these groups a wider market and a direct line to festival-season demand. Dr Prachi Jambhekar, Director (Planning) at the BMC, said the festival adds to the joy of Ganeshotsav while giving citizens a chance to actively support women entrepreneurs through their festive shopping. This isn’t the SHGs’ first civic outing either; the same groups previously ran a successful ‘Puran Poli Festival’ around Gudi Padwa earlier this year, building the kind of customer base Modak Mahotsav now taps into.
How To Register For Doorstep Delivery
Interested citizens can sign up through shgeshop.com, the BMC’s dedicated portal for SHG-made products, choosing between the steamed and fried varieties. Registration needs to be completed at least a day in advance of the desired delivery date, and Modak Mahotsav will run through the length of the Ganeshotsav period, so there’s no need to rush an order the moment registrations open.
For a city where the countdown to Ganeshotsav usually means long queues outside legacy mithai shops, this year offers an easier, more purposeful alternative: a plate of ukadiche modak that comes with a side of supporting a local women-run business, delivered straight to your door.
