Papad Exempted From GST Irrespective Of Shape & Size After Harsh Goenka Questioned The Tax Levied On Square Papads

Dining out is an expensive affair with the GST and taxes. Sure, a lot of tax is implied on alcohol but a huge tax is levied on certain food items too. A lot of restaurants even charge tax for nibbles such as peanuts and the breadbasket. But if you love papad, you can breathe a sigh of relief as the humble appetiser is exempt from GST and other taxes.

Papad Is Exempt From Taxes Irrespective Of Its Shape And Size

Yes, you will not be asked to pay any kind of tax for papad irrespective of its shape and size. No matter what fancy name is given to the papad at an eatery there will be no extra charges levied on it clarified by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). The CBIC said in a tweet, “Papad, by whatever name known, is exempt from GST vide Entry No. 96 of GST notification No.2/2017-CT(R). This entry does not distinguish based on the shape of papad. This notification is available at cbic.gov.in”

Harsh Goenka Questioned The GST On Papad

The announcement came soon after industrialist Harsh Goenka tweeted that round-shaped papad is exempt from Goods and Services Tax whereas square papad attracts the extra charges. Goenka, chairman of RPG Enterprises, tweeted, “Did you know that round papad is exempt from GST and square papad attracts GST? Can anyone suggest a good chartered accountant who can make me understand the logic?”
