McDonald’s is a renowned global brand that serves burgers, fries and other fast food options. However, McDonald’s is discontinuing cafe service at their Hong Kong outlets, which means no more coffee!

With limited-edition products like their strawberry ice cream line, McDonald’s has been receiving a lot of positive attention. The fast food restaurant chain, however, has suddenly surprised Hongkongers by announcing on its Facebook page that the brand’s premium roast coffee and ground coffee will be momentarily unavailable starting at 6 pm on September 4.

Many locals were understandably upset at first, but the fast food corporation swiftly explained that the temporary coffee suspension was caused by staff training and enhancements being made to McDonald’s locations throughout the city.

Beginning on September 5, all set meal coffee orders will automatically receive a complimentary upgrade to a small McCafé Americano. Customers can also choose to add a small McCafé white coffee or a latte to their meal for an extra HK$2 or HK$5, respectively.

As per a South China Morning Post report, a student was not happy about the decision and felt like their coffee was underrated and affordable. McDonald’s charges HK$18 for a small premium roast coffee à la carte, and HK$21 for an iced coffee.

The cost of a modest cup of ground coffee is HK$19. Comparatively, a small drip coffee from a chain competitor can cost as much as HK$31. The coffee appealed to several buyers for reasons other than just the lower price.

For some customers, McDonald’s breakfast is comfort food and coffee is an important part of it. Overall, people are expressing their disappointment over the decision.
