Visit the El Castillo, or ‘The Castle’ is one of the principal attractions and highlights of this great archeological site. It is built like a pyramid, a pyramid with the exteriors having huge steps and you might have seen this wonder in the pictures of your cover pages. Each side has 91 steps and in total it has 365 steps, representing the number of days in a year.

It looks pristine with nature and its surrounding environment. It is also called the Temple of Kulkulkan as it bears the name of the feathered serpent Mayan god. One great thing about this pyramid construction is that the rocky terrain of Chichen Itza was leveled to make space for El Castillo. It quite literally made space for itself.

Next on the list is Las Monjas, a government building that was also constructed on a level surface. However, if you approach this location, the building throws light and your attention to the ‘Temple of Kukulkan’. The temple is built according to the equinoxes of the earth so whenever you cross the temple from right to left, you’ll see that the sunlight throws a shadow on the stairway. This ends up giving the resemblance of a snake slithering down the stairs. How cool is that right? It is such an ancient monument and yet the architecture is giving us great wonders.

Last but not least, the Chichen Itza Chirp, you cannot miss this experience. Did you know that the pyramid has another intriguing quality in it? If you clap at the bottom of the pyramid then the echo of the clap somehow ends up resembling the sound of chirping of a bird!

If there are multiple claps, the chirping also sounds like a chorus. Bird and acoustic experts did some research on this sound and it resembles that of a quetzal. A bird worshipped by Mayans as they depict the ‘God Of The Air’. You are calling out to the Mayans’ air god while also being taken aback by this new phenomenon.
