Beaches by themselves, attract scores of tourists, waiting to deep their feet in the cold waters and take endless strolls on the warm sand. But beaches with lighthouses? Well, that’s like the setting of an Enid Blyton novel, waiting to be unravelled. India has around 185 majestic lighthouses. Yet lighthouse tourism isn’t really promoted in the country. So, to bring about a change, on March 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Mann Ki Baat series, highlighted the significance of lighthouse tourism in India. Modi stated that 71 lighthouses have been identified across the country for further development. Here’s everything to know.

Lighthouse Tourism To Take Off In India

On the 75th episode of the radio podcast series Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi stressed the importance of strengthening the tourism sector in India, which suffered the most amid the coronavirus pandemic. He stated that lighthouse tourism is a unique aspect of the sector. Modi further added that the government has identified 71 lighthouses across India. Facilities will be strengthened in these lighthouses to promote tourism.

71 Lighthouses To Be Equipped With Museums, Cafes, Amphitheatres & More

According to The Hans India, PM Modi stated, “I have talked about various aspects of tourism on multiple occasions during the Mann Ki Baat series, but lighthouses are unique when viewed from the perspective of tourists. Lighthouses have always been the centre of attraction because of their grand design. 71 lighthouses have been identified from all over the country to promote tourism. Museums, amphitheatre, open-air theatre, cafeteria, children’s park, eco-friendly cottages will be prepared in these lighthouses according to their capacity.”

To highlight the importance of lighthouses, PM Modi also cited the example of a lighthouse situated in Gujarat’s Jhinjhuvada town. The lighthouse, nestled 100 km away from the coastline, suggests the presence of a very busy ancient port, centuries ago. Apart from this, he also thanked “Guruprasadh Ji” from Chennai, for sharing pictures of his travels to lighthouses in Chennai, and taking an active part in the PM’s endeavours to enhance lighthouse tourism in India. So, in the near future, you can expect to witness museums, amphitheatres, cafes, eco-friendly cottages and even children’s parks at 71 lighthouses in India.
