India is the most traffic-congested country in the world. And every time a high-risk politician commutes by road, you can pretty much expect the traffic to worsen due to blockage of roads. Keeping this very thought of inconvenience caused to the public in mind, PM Modi will soon have his own tunnel in Delhi’s New Central Vista, to commute from his residence to office and the parliament. Special routes are being designed in the line of American Mall to separate the movement of high-risk politicians from the general public. This will send inconvenience and traffic jams caused during the VIP movements.

President of CEPT University and mater planner, Bimal Patel revealed during the presentation on “Central Vista Project: Reimagining and Renewing A National Icon that the idea behind this tunnel project is to free spaces so they are more accessible. During the presentation, he informed that building a tunnel for the Prime Minister connecting his home, office and other places, will free public places from security concerns. It will also separate people who need high security and place them away inside compounds as reported by Deccan Herald.
As per the presentation, the PM’s house will be relocated near the South Block and Vice-President’s house behind the North Block. Special Protection Group (SPG) office will be made into the offices of defence personnel. The two blocks housing many ministeries will be transformed into a national museum. Bimal Patel stated that the South Block will be converted into a museum titled ‘India up to 1857’. North and South blocks will be made into a grand museum of India.

The Padma Shri recipient architect stated that the Rajpath or Central Vista will house ten new buildings providing accommodation to around 60,000 government employees. He further informed that this new plan will save ₹1000 crores per year which is spent on rent for government employees, scattered all around Delhi. Underground shuttles will also be provided easing their commute and the 8 storeyed buildings will be 36m tall from the ground, which is 6m lower than India Gate. He revealed that the objective was to build an underground shuttle, connecting all buildings.
Employees could arrive at the basement and rise up into the buildings like Singapore and Dubai airports. He informed that Central Secretariat will be a Transit Oriented Development (TOD). When questioned about the impact of this project on the environment, Patel stated that large portions of parks at Rashtrapati Bhavan will be opened for the public. He further revealed that debris of demolished buildings will be reused for new construction. This project is likely to see daylight by 2024. The new parliament building will have a full house capacity if 1548 seats, 1000 chambers and will also have a golden spire. Well, for now, we can be assured that the traffic in Delhi might improve since the Prime Minister and other high-risk dignitaries will have their own special tunnel to commute.
