1. Qal’at al-Bahrain – Ancient Harbour and Capital of Dilmun

The first site of Bahrain to achieve the prestigious recognition as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites is Qal’at al-Bahrain. Globally also known as Bahrain Fort, this archaeological site was inscribed as a heritage site in 2005. The reason behind this designation is the fort holding its rich cultural value. Built back in the 14th century, Qal’at al-Bahrain has tons of history dating back to the time when it was the centre of commercial activities.

2. Bahrain Pearling Path

Bahrain is known worldwide for being home to pearls in abundance for a very very long time. And interestingly the second cultural site to be designated as one of Bahrain’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites is the Bahrain Pearling Trail. It was on 30 June 2012, when Bahrain Pearling Trail was inscribed as this prestigious recognition. This cultural heritage site is a 3.5-km long trail on Muharraq Island. The significance of this site is that pearl divers used this trail while pearling.

3. Dilmun Burial Mounds

Spread over 21 archaeological sites in the western part of Bahrain, Dilmun Burial Mounds is a vast property that illustrates the evolution of elites and Early Dilmun civilisation in the 2nd millennium BCE. Dilmun Burial Mounds was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019. The mounds are the witness of the architecture during the Early Dilmun civilisation and the traditions long back. This site was built between 2050 and 1750 BCE.
