Railways Earns Extra ₹1500 Crores By Suspending Concessions On Senior Citizens

Indian Railways suspended the special concessions for senior citizens in March 2020 after the COVID-19 pandemic hit India. As a result, Railways earned an extra revenue of ₹1500 crores from the senior citizens. Before March 2020, Railways levied concessions on female travellers who were a minimum of 58 years old and male travellers who were a minimum of 60 years old. The concessions have not been resumed yet.

Railways Suspended The Concessions Since March 2020

According to the Economic Times report, Madhya Pradesh-based Chandra Shekhar Gaur had filed a Right to Information query in response to which Railways provided the data for the period between March 20, 2020 and March 31, 2022. Railways earned a total amount of ₹3464 crores from senior citizens during the period. The amount incorporates the additional amount of ₹1500 crores, which the Railways earned after suspending the concessions.

Railways Removed Concessions For Around 7.31 Crore Senior Citizens

Railways removed concessions for around 7.31 crore senior citizens, including 2.84 crore female travellers, 4.46 crore male travellers and 8310 transgender people. ₹2082 crores, ₹1381 crores and ₹45.58 crores were earned by Railways for male, female and transgender passengers respectively between March 2020 and March 2022.
