Ratan Tata’s will also make provisions for the car washers and part-time attendants that a sum of ₹1 lakh be shared between them. The amount given to his employees was in proportion to how many years they had been working, earning him a reputation as a leader who valued commitment and hard work.

Most of Tata’s ₹3,800-crore property went to the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation and the Ratan Tata Endowment Trust. But his personal staff, with whom he spent decades, was specifically mentioned in his final wishes.

Apart from his staff, Tata’s will also reflected his commitment to social causes. He mentioned that his clothes, which included luxury brands including Brooks Brothers, Hermes, Polo, Daks, and Brioni, were to be handed over to NGOs to assist the poor.

A great animal enthusiast, Ratan Tata ensured his favourite pet German Shepherd, Tito, also received his due attention. He reserved ₹12 lakh for the dog’s upkeep, of which ₹30,000 is disbursed each quarter for its maintenance. Tito will continue to be in the custody of his cook, Rajan Shaw.

In another act of benevolence, Tata waived off a ₹1 crore loan given to his executive assistant, Shantanu Naidu, which was meant for his MBA at Cornell University. He also forgave loans taken by his neighbour and driver, Raju Leon, for ₹18 lakh.

His will read: “I instruct my executors that they shall not make any efforts to recover the loans from Shaw, Konar, and Raju Leon. The loan shall be treated as a gift from me to the concerned servants/driver.”
