Retired Rail Coaches Find New Life As Restaurants At Jammu And Katra Stations

In a delightful fusion of innovation and gastronomy, the Indian Railways is embarking on a culinary journey like no other. Two abandoned rail coaches are undergoing a remarkable transformation, evolving into theme-based restaurants set to captivate travellers and visitors at Katra and Jammu railway stations. Aptly named “Beautiful Restaurants on Wheels,” this visionary initiative promises to turn ordinary train coaches into extraordinary dining destinations.

As per PTI reports via Hindustan Times, Divisional Transportation Manager, Jammu, Prateek Srivastava, shed light on this exciting project, stating that two rail-coach restaurants are currently in the works, one in Jammu and the other in Katra. Under this scheme, Indian Railways has granted tenders to two different parties to breathe new life into these old coaches and create vibrant rail-coach restaurants.

These restaurants are also expected to bring in a substantial annual revenue of ₹50 lakh each and will occupy a spacious 1,600 square feet each. Srivastava further elaborated on the project’s approach, explaining that these coaches are being offered to private parties to develop state-of-the-art restaurants according to their unique designs.

The first coach restaurant is anticipated to welcome guests as early as December, with the coaches already in position and ready for transformation. These two new restaurants have been christened ‘Annapurna’ and ‘Maa Durga’. They will certainly add a cultural touch to the culinary experience they will offer.

The transformation of these train coaches into fully functional restaurants is projected to take 90 days. Finally, they will be equipped with all the necessary facilities to provide a great dining experience. This concept of rail-coach restaurants has already proven successful at numerous major railway stations across India. Similar initiatives are also in place at locations like Jabalpur, Bhopal, Lucknow, and Varanasi, as confirmed by the Divisional Transportation Manager.

These restaurants are set to elevate the dining experience for railway passengers. They will offer a wide array of culinary delights, including non-vegetarian options, all within a comfortable and fully air-conditioned environment. In addition to providing yummy meals, these Railways’ Food-on-Wheels restaurants will feature stylish interiors and exteriors. They will also have display panels offering virtual tours of various places in Jammu and Kashmir.

This great project is set to redefine railway station dining.
