The Riyadh Metro was finally launched to the public last week and since then, it has been the talk of the town. However, there’s another reason why it has created a buzz in the town. Yes, Riyadh Art, which is one of the world’s largest public art programmes has done something special with the launch of this public service system. As it happens, they have unveiled four monumental public art projects that are transforming stations into gorgeous cultural landmarks.

For instance, at the King Abdullah Financial District Metro Station, a colourful sculpture exemplifies the pioneering spirit of kinetic energy. Yes, a station that has been designed by internationally acclaimed Zaha Hadid Architects, has been beautified with Alexander Calder’s ‘Janey Waney’ installation. This offers a dynamic and engaging experience to the visitors at the station.

What Do These Artworks Signify?

In fact, just nearby is Robert Indiana’s ‘LOVE (Red Outside Blue Inside),’ which is truly one of the world’s most recognised artworks. Commuters are bound to be captivated by its vibrant interplay of colours and of course universal themes of hope and connection.

At the Qasr Al-Hokm Downtown Metro Station, The Sun by Ugo Rondinone has taken centre stage. Making for a luminous golden centrepiece, it symbolises energy and renewal. Not to mention, Zaman Jassim’s ‘When the Moon is Full’ perfectly complements this piece, which is inspired by Riyadh’s cultural heritage.

As revealed in a report by Khaleej Times, this work was led by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, and Riyadh Art aims to make the capital a global centre for Contemporary Art and Culture. It has seamlessly integrated art into the urban fabric and displays more than 500 artworks by leading local and international artists.
