Why You Should Visit This Quaint Village In Meghalaya
Nestled at an elevation of 1,400 metres, Mawlynnong is mostly blanketed in mist. The village is also known as ‘God’s Own Garden’. Located in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district, with just about 500 residents, this picturesque hamlet will win you over with its pristine streets (think no plastic anywhere!) and a harmonious community.
Just like Sachin Tendulkar, tourists coming to Mawlynnong are encouraged to participate in the village’s eco-friendly practices. They are shown and made aware of practices like composting and rainwater harvesting. In fact, even the dustbins here are made of bamboo. All the waste collected in these bins are directed to a pit and then used as manure. Smoking and use of polythene is completely banned in this village. The idea is to show people how nature and humanity can coexist in perfect balance.
