Glasgow Central Rail Services Hit As Nearby Fire Leads To Widespread Train Cancellations

The fate of rail travel through Glasgow Central Station met a standstill on Sunday after a fire broke out at a nearby commercial property. This forced operators to cancel dozens of train services, leaving passengers scrambling to rearrange their journeys as the disruption is expected to last throughout Monday.

Fire Breaks Out Near Glasgow Central Station, Disrupting Rail Travel

According to NewsX, the blaze was reported at a building on Union Street in central Glasgow, just a short distance from the station. Emergency teams from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were dispatched to the site during the afternoon, deploying multiple fire engines and specialist equipment to tackle the flames.

Smoke rising above the city centre quickly triggered safety precautions around the transport hub. Rail operators suspended all high-level train services that normally pass through Glasgow Central while emergency crews worked nearby. At the same time, trains travelling along the low-level route continued moving through the network but were unable to stop at the station. This led to the closure of one of Scotland’s busiest rail interchanges.

Dozens Of Rail Routes Cancelled After Union Street Blaze

Dozens of services were cancelled almost immediately, disrupting both commuter routes and longer intercity journeys. Travellers planning to pass through Glasgow Central, a major gateway connecting Scotland’s largest city to destinations across the country, suddenly had their plans upended. Many were forced to seek alternative routes or wait for updates from rail operators.

Authorities confirmed that the service suspensions were implemented primarily as a safety measure. With firefighters working close to the rail infrastructure and nearby streets closed off, running trains normally through the station could not be safe. Emergency responders also needed clear access to the affected area while tackling the blaze.

The incident had ripple effects that went beyond just the rail network. The nearby Voco Grand Central Glasgow, located directly beside the station, was evacuated as a precaution while emergency services dealt with the situation.

More than 60 firefighters were involved in efforts to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to surrounding buildings. Large plumes of smoke were seen above the city centre as crews worked to bring the blaze under control.

Officials later said there were no immediate reports of injuries, though parts of the affected building were damaged in the incident. Investigations into what caused the fire are expected to follow, as stated by NewsX.
