Flights delaying or cancelling due to technical fault is a common occurrence nowadays. But what if you smell something fishy on the plan and get anxious? Well, a passenger flying from Cochin to Sharjah went through something similar. The passenger travelling to Sharjah from an Air India Express flight reported smelling something burning in the aircraft. His suspension made the pilots turn the flight back to Cochin International Airport.

An Air India Express flight from Kochi to Sharjah had to make a precautionary landing at the Kochi airport on August 2 night due to a passenger reporting a suspected burning smell shortly after takeoff, an airline source said on Thursday. Flight IX 434, which had 173 passengers and six crew members on board, took off from the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) at 9.15 pm and returned at 9.50 pm after the pilot informed the air traffic control (ATC) about the situation, the source said.

The passenger who reported the burning smell was examined by a doctor at the airport and was found to be fine as per Air India Spokesperson to the media.

The flight was later cleared for departure after a thorough inspection by the engineering team and no anomalies were detected, the source said. The airline spokesperson said that it was a normal landing and no emergency or urgent call was made by the pilot to the ATC. The spokesperson also said that the safety of the passengers and crew was of utmost priority and the airline followed all the standard operating procedures in such situations.

This was the second incident of a flight returning to Kochi airport in less than a week. On July 30, an Air India Express flight from Sharjah to Kochi declared a full emergency after it was suspected that it had experienced a hydraulic malfunction. The flight landed safely and all 183 passengers and six crew members were safe4.

On July 15, another Air Arabia flight from Sharjah to Kochi also declared a full emergency due to a hydraulic failure. The flight landed safely and all 222 passengers and seven crew members were safe5.
