Shimla, Coorg See Surge In Flight Bookings In May, June As Indians Take Vacays To Escape Scorching Summer

The scorching heatwave gripping parts of the world isn’t dampening travel spirits, it seems. In fact, a surprising trend is emerging – a surge in travel searches for the summer months which means an automatic surge in flight bookings!

Travel booking platforms are reporting a record-breaking increase in flight searches for May and June. Domestic travel searches have jumped by 20% compared to last year, with international searches witnessing a staggering 70% rise. Interestingly, this travel enthusiasm is coupled with a clear preference for cooler destinations.

Within India, travellers are seeking respite from the heat in locations like Srinagar, Shimla, Coorg, Manali, and Leh. These destinations offer a refreshing escape with their pleasant temperatures and scenic beauty. This shift in choice highlights a traveller’s desire for comfort without sacrificing their summer vacation plans.

A Shift In International Getaways

The heatwave is also impacting international travel choices. Traditionally popular European summer destinations are seeing less interest this year. Instead, travellers are opting for getaways to cooler locations like Melbourne, Toronto, Vietnam, Colombo, and Singapore.

These destinations offer a welcome change from the scorching heat, allowing travellers to explore new cultures and landscapes in comfortable temperatures. There is a surge in flight bookings, but the impact on airfares is mixed.

Hotter destinations like Goa have not seen a significant rise in prices compared to last year, suggesting high travel demand. Cooler destinations, such as Delhi to Srinagar, have slightly increased in prices, possibly due to increased demand for relief from heat.

Long-term comparisons show a more significant rise in airfares compared to pre-pandemic times, with a one-way flight from Delhi to Leh in May 2024 costing ₹7,920 compared to ₹7,902 in May 2019. Overall, airfares have not reached pre-pandemic levels yet.

The heatwave is undoubtedly influencing travel decisions. Travellers are opting for cooler destinations, both domestically and internationally. While airfares haven’t skyrocketed for popular destinations, there has been a slight increase for preferred cooler locations. This trend highlights the growing importance of comfortable travel experiences while balancing the desire for exploration and relaxation.
