Mumbaikars! Prepare for more traffic woes. The Sion Bridge will close from tomorrow onwards for reconstruction purposes. Once it closes, it will only reopen after two years with improved facilities which will enhance travel for those who use the bridge. Until then, though, the affected areas must prepare for traffic jams. Here are all of the important details that you would need to know about the closure of the Sion Bridge.

According to an article which was recently published by Mid-day, the authorities will demolish the bridge in a step-by-step manner. As per an official from Central Railway cited in the article, first, the tar will be removed and utilities will be shifted.

The final stage will entail the dismantling of the structure. The bridge will be under reconstruction for two years and will be reintegrated in January 2026. The bridge was supposed to be demolished earlier however, it kept getting delayed.

Initially, it was supposed to be demolished on January 20 this year but locals and residents raised objections. The date was then postponed to February 28. However, it was postponed again on account of SSC and HSC examinations.

20 Bus Routes Impacted; Traffic Congestion Expected On Routes

As of now, the bridge is 27 metres but the new one will be 52 metres. The bridge is one of the major connectors of the city and once it closes, traffic woes are expected to increase. At least 20 BEST bus routes will be impacted owing to the closure. 

Five of these routes will be terminated while the other 15 will be directed to alternate routes. Authorities are working optimally to ensure efficiency and safety.
