On Friday, a devastating incident took place in the heart of the city — the shopping and tourist district. An under-construction building — rather a skyscraper – was engulfed in flames out of nowhere. According to the officials, the fire in Tsim Sha Tsui was ‘largely put out’ by 8:30 am (per the local time). This is nine hours after the building was on fire. This has caused a large section of Nathan Road to be shut. This has been proved to be an inconvenience for the locals. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. However, around one hundred and seventy people were escorted from the neighbouring buildings. And they were relocated to a safe area.

Since the place was in a crowded locality, the sparks were raining down the neighbouring streets. Moreover, the disaster was visible across the harbour and people could smell the acrid fumes in the air. There were blackened walls and debris around the area after the fire was put out. Municipal workers were seen cleaning the mess. As for the building, it was supposed to be a ‘harbour side icon’ with forty-two storeys.

Fire Incident That Shook The Country

This fire incident wasn’t the first one to happen in Hong Kong. In 1996, a commercial complex called ‘Garley’ erupted in fire. It was a sixteen-storey building and one of the worst fires to happen in the city. The death count reported was around forty and nearly eighty people were injured. Excluding the middle area of the building, the top two and bottom three floors were engulfed in fire.

The main reasons for such fire incidents are underground electric tables, combustion of combustible material, electrical appliances, lighting, smoking or an electric short circuit.
