Ever since the beginning of 2024, lots of shocking news from the aviation industry across the world has been making headlines. In a recent development, SpiceJet has reportedly decided to lay off about 1,400 employees. The news of the massive layoff has come as a major blow for many, especially employees associated with the workforce of the airline.

To Reduce Costs & Some Other Reasons, SpiceJet Took The Lay-Off Decision

According to various reports surfacing online, the cash-strapped airline has confirmed the losses and the cuts as well. SpiceJet is letting go of almost 15 per cent of its workforce with the recent development of laying off 1,400 employees. The airline concluded this decision to not just cut off costs in times of cash crunch but also to attract the interest of investors, according to a report by The Economic Times.

The present number of employees working for SpiceJet is 9,000 and it runs around 30 flights. Out of these 30 flights, the number of wet-leased from international carriers is 8. This also includes pilots and crew members. A spokesperson of the budget airline shared the decision is being taken to ensure companywide costs against operational needs.

According to reports, SpiceJet has been delaying the payments of employees’ salaries for a few months. Many of them have not received the January month’s salary. According to The Economic Times report, the airline mentioned working to get a fund infusion of ₹2,200 crore. Sadly, some investors are developing cold feet at this moment.

The Airline Began Informing The Staff Already

According to a report by Hindustan Times, many employees are already receiving calls about the layoffs. Some people aware of the development and decision stated that the cuts of employees are necessary due to the ₹60 crore salary bill of the airline. Back in 2019, SpiceJet’s fleet included a total of 118 planes and 16,000 employees.
