The new system, developed in collaboration with GBS Technology Service and IVS Global Institute, streamlines the visa application process. Travellers can now apply for visas directly through the Department of Immigration and Emigration’s online portal. This eliminates the need for paper applications and simplifies the process for travellers from all over the world.

The online portal offers a range of benefits for both travellers and Sri Lankan authorities. Applicants can expect a faster turnaround time for their visa applications, with the online system facilitating quicker processing and approvals. Additionally, the portal provides a clear and user-friendly interface, guiding applicants through the process step-by-step. This reduces the risk of errors or missing information, ensuring a smoother application experience.

For Sri Lanka, the new system promises improved efficiency in managing visa applications. The online platform allows for better organisation and tracking of applications, streamlining internal processes. Additionally, the system can generate valuable data on visitor demographics and travel trends, which can be used to inform future tourism development strategies.

The introduction of the online visa system coincides with the introduction of revised visa categories, fees, and validity periods. Among the new options are the Standards and Entertainment Purposes Visa which is ideal for long-term visitors or those planning multiple trips and Standard Tourist Business Visa for travellers combining business and leisure activities. Fees vary depending on nationality, with SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) countries enjoying a concessionary rate.

The Sri Lankan government believes that the new online visa system will significantly enhance the country’s attractiveness as a tourist destination. By simplifying the application process and offering a wider range of visa options, Sri Lanka aims to attract more visitors and contribute to its economic development through increased foreign exchange revenue and investment.
