Switching To Plant-Based Diet From Animal-Based Diet May Reduce CVD & Diabetes Risk: Study

Remember when you were young and your mother used to chide you for not eating your veggies? Well, as it turns out, veggies may be the key to a healthier body and a higher mortality rate! According to a new study published in the BMC Medicine Journal, switching to a plant-based diet from an animal-based may be much healthier. Here are all the important details that you would need to know about this particular study.

According to a study, switching animal-based food items like processed meat as well as red meat with plant-based ones may be healthier. This study was recently published in the journal BMC Medicine. The study found that incorporating legumes and nuts in your diet instead of animal-based food items may help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

In addition to this, it may also help reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease or CVD and even improve the overall rate of mortality. The study in question analysed findings from around 37 studies which were conducted earlier. The result revealed the potential benefits of incorporating more plant-based food items into one’s diet.

According to an article which was recently published by Investing.com, the researchers stated the benefits of a plant-based diet. Moving from food items such as processed and red meat, eggs, poultry and butter, to items such as olive oil, whole grain, nuts and legumes, positively affects cardiometabolic health and all-cause mortality.

The research for the study entailed a thorough and systematic literature review of studies on MEDLINE, Embase and Web of Science. Studies that employed substitution analysis of animal-based food items with plant-based food items were taken. Upon doing so, it was found that there was a “moderate certainty of evidence” for replacing animal-based products in your diet with plant-based ones.

They found that replacing one egg daily with nuts yielded a correlation with lower CVD mortality. Substituting butter with olive oil also yielded similar results. Replacing 50 grams of processed meat with 28 grams of nuts every day was related to a reduced risk of coronary heart disease. Moreover, replacing red meat or eggs with nuts and butter with olive oil was also inversely related to the frequency of type 2 diabetes.

It is important to note, however, that the study found that replacing poultry or seafood with nuts or legumes was not such a good idea. So, if you want to live a longer and healthier life, you should have a plant-based diet.
