In just a week, we’ll be celebrating one of my favourite festivals, Navratri. As an Amdavadi, these nine days are some of the happiest days of the year for me, especially because of Garba. And if you’re a Garba lover, I’m sure you feel the same way. But before we get ready to dance the whole night, here are some interesting facts about Garba you may not know. 1. What Is The History Of Garba?

According to legend, Mahishasura, a powerful demon king, created havoc across the world. The gods combined their powers to create Goddess Durga, who fought him for nine days. On the tenth day, she defeated and killed him, bringing peace to the world. Garba is believed to celebrate Goddess Durga’s victory and strength. 

2. What Does The Word Garba Mean?

The word Garba comes from the Sanskrit word “Garbha”. In English, it means womb. In Gujarat, Garba was traditionally associated with important stages in a woman’s life, including her first menstrual cycle and marriage. Earlier, women used to play Garba around a lit clay pot and move in circles.

3. Why Do People Play Garba In A Circle?

When playing Garba, you must’ve noticed that people follow this dance form in a circle. It’s not a coincidence; it has a meaning behind it. People play Garba in a circle because it represents the circle of life. It includes birth, life, death and rebirth. The circular movement also symbolises that life keeps moving and has no beginning or end.

4. How Old Is The Tradition Of Garba? 

Garba has been around for centuries and is believed to have started around the 13th century. This makes the Gujarati dance around 700 to 800 years old. From being a traditional dance in Gujarat to becoming a huge part of Navratri celebrations, Garba has come a long way. 

5. Which City Is Known As The Garba Capital Of India?

Vadodara, also known as Baroda, is often called the Garba capital of India. The city is famous for its grand Navratri celebrations, where thousands of people come together to dance Garba. Vadodara is also known for its famous United Way of Baroda Garba.
