Waleed Khamis Al Abdouli’s Labour Of Love

In 2015, Waleed Khamis Al Abdouli left his ancestral home. But he couldn’t seem to get away from it. His mind kept returning to his 100-year-old mud-walled cottage in Tayibbah village, which nestles in the steep Hajjar mountains of Fujairah. So in order to preserve his memories rather than leaving it to age in ruins, Waleed turned it into Airbnb.

The young father is a member of the UAE’s armed forces. He used his life resources to turn the two-story inn into the picturesque mountain retreat that is now known as the Al Qala Lodge.

What To Expect Inside This Airbnb?

The simple resort debuted just four years ago. It is already a popular hit with staycationers looking for a genuine Emirati experience in the reliable companionship of nature. As you pass by Fujairah’s Masafi market, it’s difficult to miss the location. On the front of the cabin is a photograph of Sheikh Zayed, the UAE’s founding father. This sits close to the Flag Fort, which was also designed and built by Al Abdouli.

Flag Fort is generally rare in a tourism guidebook, but it is well worth a stop because it provides some excellent photo opportunities. Al Abdouli greets guests with Gahwa coffee, a typical Arab beverage. Majlis-style furnishings, accent table beds, antique decor, and ventilators that have withstood the whims of nature add to the old-world appeal.

The two-bedroom apartment of Waleed Khamis can sleep up to six adults, and is also possibly the UAE’s only Airbnb with a thatched roof. It is a unique and prized design element that maintains the house cool in summer and warm and warm and dry in winter.
