This Retired Couple Sold Their 4000-Sq-Foot House To Travel The World!

How serious are you about funding your next travel? We bet you can’t be as serious as this 62-year-old couple, who sold their 4000-square-foot house, just to travel the world!

What Made Them Sell It?

Joe and Karen Stermitz owned a house in Southern Washington, near Portland, Oregon. Both of them were working in a technology-based corporate company for years. Karen, the wife, retired at the age of 55, whereas the husband, Joe, retired from the job at the age of 60.

In a recent interview, they revealed some of their earliest trips used to be as backpackers. They would meet Europeans, who were wagon campers, which would make them wonder, ‘how cool it would be to go wherever you want?’ As they started thinking about following their dreams, post retirement, the thought of selling their house seemed like a possibility.

On The Road

The couple who had owned houses throughout their career that also ‘turned out to be good investments’, then decided to sell their 4000-square-foot house and make an overlanding vehicle their home, temporarily, for now. An overlanding vehicle is a six-foot by seven-foot camper which is all about being self-sufficient. You can drive and camp wherever, with the right permits of course!

It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was a happy one for sure. To live a nomadic life at a retirement age where most people want to sit at home and bask in the sun, is quite gutsy. However, it was a decision that was taken by Joe and Karen mutually, hence they have no regrets. In fact, they feel that people shouldn’t wait till 65 to start living their lives. They wish, they had done it sooner.
