Are Safaris Banned At Bandipur And Nagarahole Tiger Reserves In Karnataka?

People enjoy safari rides and spotting wildlife in their natural habitat. However, in Karnataka, there has been ongoing discussion about the reopening of safaris in Bandipur Tiger Reserve and Nagarahole Tiger Reserve. In a recent development, the Karnataka High Court has brought relief by refusing to ban wildlife safaris. Read on to know more.

Karnataka High Court Declines Ban On Wildlife Safari

The Karnataka High Court has decided not to ban wildlife safaris for now. According to Asianet News, the decision came during a hearing on a Public Interest Litigation filed by Mysuru resident V. Ravikumar. A division bench led by Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru heard the matter and chose not to stop safari activities at this stage. Instead of imposing a ban, the court asked the state government to submit a detailed affidavit.

The bench has directed the government to clearly map the boundaries of different zones inside the reserves. These include the core zone, buffer zone, and tourism zone. The report must also specify the exact locations where safaris are currently being conducted.

Why Was Wildlife Safari Reopened Earlier?

The case focuses on safari operations in Bandipur Tiger Reserve and Nagarahole Tiger Reserve. As per Asianet News, during the hearing, the petitioner’s lawyer argued that safaris were earlier banned in these regions. He claimed they were restarted due to pressure from political and commercial groups. He also warned that such activities could increase human-wildlife conflict.

On the other hand, the court highlighted an important point. It said that a “critical tiger habitat” is not always the same as a “core zone.” The judges stressed that this difference needs proper verification. They explained that tiger reserves are divided into three zones: core, buffer, and tourism. Safari activities are usually allowed only in buffer and not meant for core areas.

The court also referred to guidelines set by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). According to these rules, safaris should take place in buffer zones, preferably on non-forest or degraded land. These activities must avoid critical habitats and important tiger corridors.

This issue gained attention after a rise in human-wildlife conflict last year. Between October and November, several lives were lost in incidents reported from these regions.
