Edinburgh To Introduce A 5% Tourist Tax
Edinburgh has become the first city in Scotland, UK, to introduce a tourist tax. According to the BBC, tourists staying overnight in hotels, bed and breakfasts and self-catering accommodation will be charged an additional 5% on top of their booking cost. Edinburgh attracts travellers from across the world for its old-world charm, ancient castles and vibrant arts scene. This is why the city is aiming to raise about £50 million annually through this tourist tax.
The funds will be used to improve infrastructure, including new housing, cultural initiatives and a wider police presence. Edinburgh has now joined the list of other European destinations that charge a tourist tax, including Amsterdam, Paris and Rome.

Who Will Have To Pay The Tax?
Some people believe the extra cost could discourage potential visitors. According to the BBC, the tax will be collected by accommodation providers and passed on to the city council. Here’s an important detail. The charge is capped at five nights. For example, if a hotel room costs £100 per night for five nights, the total accommodation cost would be £500. With the tourist tax, you would pay £525. The tax rate will remain the same throughout the year.
The tax will apply only to tourists staying overnight. So, if you are visiting Edinburgh on a day trip, you will not have to pay it. Reportedly, the charge is being introduced in time for Edinburgh’s traditional summer festivals in August, including the Edinburgh International Festival, Edinburgh International Book Festival and Edinburgh International Film Festival.
