Some theme parks recreate movie sets, but Super Nintendo World recreates childhood. Sitting in all its child-like wonder and glory inside Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, Super Nintendo World opened in March 2021 and became one of the country’s biggest attractions.

Every inch of the Super Nintendo World has been imagined with obsessive attention to detail, right down to the moving scenery and familiar game sounds. Legendary Nintendo creator Shigeru Miyamoto was closely involved in its development, and it shows. The famous green Warp Pipe doesn’t simply mark the entrance; it feels like a portal into the Mushroom Kingdom itself.

The biggest crowd-puller is Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge, and for good reason. Instead of watching the race unfold, you’re part of it. Wearing an augmented reality visor attached to a Mario cap, you speed through Bowser’s Castle, firing shells, dodging enemies and competing alongside your companions. Yes, it’s all happening in the real world in real time. Even the queue deserves its own applause, winding through an elaborately recreated castle filled with trophies, portraits and hidden nods that long-time Nintendo fans will instantly recognise.

The park’s newest chapter belongs to Donkey Kong. It’s recently opened Donkey Kong Country expansion exchanges castles for dense jungle trails, towering ruins and waterfalls before culminating in Mine Cart Madness, or a roller coaster engineered to create the illusion of jumping across broken tracks. Isn’t that a hoot?

Super Nintendo World Japan: Everything To Know Before You Visit

Then comes the part that no ordinary amusement park hosts. Buy a Power-Up Band, connect it to the Universal Studios Japan app, and suddenly you’re no longer just a visitor. You’re collecting digital coins, punching Question Blocks, solving interactive mini-games, earning keys, climbing leaderboards and eventually unlocking a final boss battle against Bowser Jr. The entire land behaves like a giant playable level rather than a collection of rides.

And yes, the food stays the main character too, as little Mario needs big energy! Kinopio’s Cafe serves Mario-inspired burgers, Fire Flower pasta, Mushroom Soup, Princess Peach desserts and even a Question Block tiramisu, while Yoshi’s Snack Island dishes out its famous green shell calzone alongside themed drinks and snacks. Outside, the shops tempt almost every visitor with Japan-exclusive merchandise, from Boo and Yoshi plushies to Mario Kart collectables and the sought-after Power-Up Bands themselves.

One thing first-time visitors often don’t realise is that entry isn’t always as simple as buying a Universal Studios Japan ticket. During busy days, access to Super Nintendo World is controlled through timed entry passes, making an early arrival or an Express Pass a worthwhile investment if this land tops your Osaka itinerary.
