Among pizza lovers, one debate never seems to end: toppings! We all have our favourites and often ask restaurants to remove the ones we don’t like. The same goes for others, too. One topping that gets a lot of hate is pineapple on pizza. And now, it has even become the reason for a workplace dispute. Know what happened!

How Did A Pineapple Pizza Topping Lead To An Italian Chef’s Firing?

An Italian chef in Australia disliked pineapple toppings on pizza so much that it reportedly cost him his job. As per a BBC report, the chef, Davide Tamburella, worked at the now-closed La Costa restaurant in Brisbane, Australia. He was dismissed in May, around two weeks after a meeting with the management over several complaints about his behaviour at work.

One of the complaints was his refusal to make ham and pineapple pizzas for guests attending a function. Yes, you read that right! Tamburella reportedly told the restaurant’s management that he would not do something that is against or insults his Italian culture. As per the Free Press Journal, a customer made a booking worth ₹9 lakh for a private event. The package also included pizza.

This Wasn’t His First Time Rejecting Pineapple Toppings

This was not the first time he refused to make pineapple pizza. According to the Fair Work Commission, the Italian chef had refused to make pineapple pizza three times over four years. In one of the disputes, the chef even told his employer to check how important it was for Italians not to put pineapple on pizza. However, he was fired on May 20, which he claimed was unfair.

Davide Tamburella believed that his dismissal was partly because of a workplace injury. He had fractured bones in his right hand after hitting a metal handrail at work. However, the Fair Work Commission rejected his unfair dismissal claim because he filed it after the official deadline. Meanwhile, La Costa’s managing director, Elliot Ingram, told the Daily Mail that there was “more to this story than a pizza topping”.
