Indian Railways Introduces New Garbage Disposal System
To manage waste during long train journeys, Indian Railways has decided to work on a modified garbage disposal system. As per The Indian Express, this new plan has been developed by the Wagon Repair Workshop in Jhansi. The aim behind this new system is to increase waste storage capacity and reduce the need to empty or handle garbage bins.
Right now, train coaches use two standard garbage bins, and each has a capacity of around 15-20 litres. This capacity can be enough during short journeys but not for longer ones. The lack of proper capacity can result in passengers throwing waste outside the train, inside coaches or simply near the garbage bins.

How Does This System Work?
This modified garbage disposal system will have three main parts: a garbage drop box, a connector and an undergear garbage collector. Passengers will continue to throw waste into the drop box inside the coaches. The connector will then channel the garbage into the large collector placed underneath the coach.
The new system will use gravity to help the garbage move down, so railway staff won’t need to handle it during the journey. The collector will store the waste until it is emptied during maintenance.
As for the capacity, the proposed undergear garbage collector can hold 367.4 litres of waste. Moreover, it will be made of stainless steel, which can help the system last longer. The drop box and collector can also be cleaned separately from both sides. This can make it easier to maintain hygiene and keep unpleasant odours under control.
